Mambo Italiano

I have been Netflixing random movies and this week I got the movie Mambo Italiano.

From IMDB.com

Angelo Barberini is the oddball son of Italian immigrants Gino and Maria, who inadvertently ended up in Canada rather than the States. Angelo shocks his parents by moving out on his own without getting married, and shocks them further still when he reveals that he's gay. But his boyfriend, policeman Nino Paventi isn't as ready to come out of the closet -- especially not to his busybody mother, Lina.

I think I enjoyed the movie because I am part Italian and see parts of my family in those being portrayed. My mother is the Italian in my family and she comes from a LARGE Italian family. I remember when I was little going to LARGE family get togethers and meeting a lot of family odd balls. I was kind of attracted to the main character Angelo. I don’t know why, but I was. I connected with him because he wanted to become a television writer, just like me.

What’s funny is that in a “Brokeback” kind of scene where Nino and Angelo first hook up in a tent while camping. The movie was made in 2003 so it was pre-Brokeback.

Anyway, if any of you have Netflix (or the Blockbuster service) I suggest you check it out. I don’t like the ending of the movie. The acting is okay and I hear the play version is a LOT better than the movie if you get good actors.

  1. I bought this film for my boyfriend as a gift. We both really like it as well and he is part Italian as well. I related b/c I come from a pretty strict Catholic family. I didn't necessarily like the end either, but in some ways at least it didn't end in a "hollywood" kinda way. Good luck with the job hunt. My advice is to start making real-life connections. I hate to sound cliche, but the more people you know the better you'll find what you're looking for...

  2. It's funny that you mentioned this movie. I got it for christmas a few years ago and totally forgot I owned it. After I saw that you watched it I decided to check it out. It wasn't amazing, but it was a good laugh at times. And the cop was hott haha. Interesting concept that I'm sure is real for some people.
